Today, Delaware Governor Matt Meyer signed SB 250 into law, strengthening legal protections for children and families across the state. The updated Delaware Parentage Act helps ensure that more children have legally recognized relationships with the parents who love and care for them, providing greater security and stability for families.
COLAGE helped make this victory possible by organizing advocates, educating policymakers, and ensuring lawmakers heard directly from people with LGBTQ+ parents whose lives are affected by these laws. Their stories helped move this legislation forward.
For over 35 years COLAGE has been the only national organization exclusively dedicated to uniting and empowering people with LGBTQ+ parents/caregivers. Through advocacy we help build the legal framework that ensures COLAGErs grow up in families that are recognized, protected, and supported.
As many states continue to: rely on outdated parentage laws, uphold policies that restrict access to fertility healthcare, and fuel school-based hostility through efforts to limit LGBTQ+ discussions in schools, our community needs robust nationwide protections to secure our families and ensure young people feel safe and supported.
Delaware's updated parentage law demonstrates what's possible when COLAGErs are given the opportunity to share their experiences directly with lawmakers. The oral and written testimony of people with LGBTQ+ parents helped illustrate the real-world impact of these laws and build support for reform.
We are currently coordinating with GLAD Law, Lambda Legal, and the ACLU to respond to St. Mary’s Catholic Parish v. Roy. This case considers whether schools receiving public funding can exclude kids based on their family structure. It will be heard by the Supreme Court later this year. We’ve issued a public statement, created messaging guidance, and are actively working on an amicus brief.
Your support between now and June 30th is essential to make this possible. $10,000 will help equip COLAGErs with the tools and skills to testify (like we did in CT, CO, MI, MA, and DE) and create state-by-state and national FAQs about policies impacting our families from a queerspawn perspective. If you’re not in a position to make a large donation, consider a monthly donation which provides a steady flow of income and frees us up to seek additional funding sources to expand our reach.
Any money raised beyond our immediate $10,000 goal will contribute to our reach goal of $100,000 to help us scale our impact one state at a time.
