Our Climate’s leading objective is to empower the next generation of young leaders to effectively advance state and federal climate justice legislation, in order to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions, hold polluters accountable, and invest in frontline communities that are facing the consequences of the climate crisis first and worst. While this work is urgent, we recognize this fight requires a sustained and multi-faceted effort, including a diverse set of solutions and partners. For this reason, we believe that the greatest long-term impact of our organization will come from the incredible youth leaders who participate in our programs. By providing the skills, experiences, and resources to effectively engage in climate justice advocacy efforts, we equip youth to become confident and capable lifelong environmental justice leaders.
Young people are uniquely threatened by the climate crisis. Raging wildfires, rising tides, dramatic weather events, and deadly heat waves have made the severity of the climate crisis front and center. Intentionally ignored communities -- including but not limited to BIPOC communities, those with disabilities, the unhoused, rural areas, and low-income families -- are facing the effects of the climate crisis first and worse. The climate crisis exacerbates existing systems of oppression and inequalities. In today’s age of compounding crises, it is evermore critical that climate solutions are intersectional and center those communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
Our youth leaders are focused on advancing and winning legislative solutions that are aligned with our three policy principles: 1) Precisely vetted and enforced renewable energy targets; 2) Strong, specific corporate polluter fees to equitably fund a just transition from fossil fuels; 3) Environmental Justice legislation that provide specific protections and resources for environmental justice communities. We believe that climate policies must protect frontline communities most affected by the climate crisis. This means investing in frontline communities that are facing the interrelated burdens of racism, economic injustice, inadequate access to healthcare, and climate change.
