The Candidate: A licensed clinical social worker, Rep. Susan Ruiz (D) represents the 23rd District in the state House of Representatives. In 2018, she was elected alongside Brandon Woodard as the state's first openly LGBTQ state legislators.

The Case for Support: In the 2018 election, Rep. Ruiz won her district with 52% of the vote and won re-election in 2020 with 55% of the vote. She was moved in part to run because, in 2016, she married her partner of twenty years, one month before she passed away. Ruiz brings that experience to the legislature as a vocal advocate for LGBTQ equality and justice. She faces re-election in 2022.
