In 2018, Kansas elected Democratic Governor Laura Kelly. In her first official act, Gov. Kelly signed an executive order reinstating the protections for LGBTQ workers that were eliminated by her Republican predecessor. Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers, and thus can override any of Gov. Kelly’s vetoes. Democrats are one seat away from breaking the supermajority in the Kansas House and two seats away from breaking the supermajority in the Senate. Providing the legislative back-up will allow Governor Kelly to be even more bold and aggressive with her proactive actions and defeating anti-LGBTQ legislation that could reach her desk.
