The Q Trust - Michigan Slate

Democrats are four seats away from flipping the State House. Advocates in the state have been trying to pass comprehensive and inclusive nondiscrimination protections aggressively for the past decade. In fact, the current Speaker, Lee Chatfield (R), initially won his seat in 2014 by primarying a Republican champion on including sexual orientation and gender identity protections to the Eliot Larsen Civil Rights Act. It is clear that unless Democrats are able to win the gavel, movement on pro-LGBTQ legislation is unlikely. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has made this legislation a priority for her administration and control of one-chamber greatly increases the likelihood. The Senate is not up in 2020.
