The Q Trust - North Carolina Slate

In addition to being a key federal battleground state, North Carolina will have critical state-level races - from the governor and attorney general to the state supreme court and legislature - that will impact the lives of LGBTQ people. In 2016, after Governor Pat McCrory (R) signed the anti-LGBTQ HB2 bill into law and businesses boycotted, long-time LGBTQ ally Attorney General Roy Cooper defeated McCrory by less than 10,000 votes - while Trump won the state by nearly 4%. When Governor Cooper took office, Republicans had a supermajority in the State House. After making major gains in 2018, Democrats are now only four seats away from flipping the State House and four seats away from flipping the State Senate. Re-electing Gov. Cooper and winning pro-equality legislative majorities will allow for new progressive legislation, including Medicaid expansion which will help thousands of LGBTQ North Carolinians. The courts in North Carolina have been critical to progressive wins, and there are key judicial races, as well as the pro-equality Attorney General Josh Stein, on the ballot in November 2020.
