Laura's #ReadForMaui fundraiser: Our Hawaii

embed errored

After wildfires fueled by both climate breakdown and colonialist land use devastated Maui - the deadliest wildfire in the US in over a century - a group of Booktokkers and Bookstagrammers called the Queer Collective started a read-a-thon to raise money for mutual aid. #ReadForMaui #ReadingForMaui

The read-a-thon, modeled after the #TransRightsReadathon started by Sim Kern, is a decentralized effort where anyone can 1.) read books by Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander authors and 2.) raise money for vetted orgs providing aid to wildfire survivors in Maui.

I have chose Our Hawaii, which is "building a movement to create a Hawai'i that puts kama’āina and kānaka maoli — not big money interests — first." They are working with other local groups to both provide immediate aid and engage in long-term organizing to address the conditions that made these fires so deadly in the first place. You can read more about their Maui fire relief and recovery efforts here: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mauilonghaul

Reading for Maui is exactly the kind of solidarity we need in an increasingly burning world. Please join me in donating if you can, and spread the word!
