Two initiatives currently collecting the necessary signatures to be on the November 2022 ballot will, if passed, substantially change our ability to build affordable housing downtown.
The Empty Home Tax seeks to pass a bill that would tax homes that are left empty most of the year. (www.emptyhometax.org)
Our Downtown, Our Future will require that the General, the City, and the Coastal Plans be amended to dedicate most City-owned lots downtown for affordable housing, prevent the construction of parking garages above ground, direct revenue from not building the garage to affordable housing and towards upgrading the current downtown library. The initiative will also ensure that the Farmers' Market remain permanently on Lot 4 where is has been for many years. (www.ourdowntownourfuture.org)
