In one of its final acts, the Trump Administration stripped Endangered Species Act safeguards from gray wolves nationwide.
It took just weeks for Wisconsin to become the first state to set a wolf hunting and trapping season. That hastily-planned, 3-day season led to the killing of more than 200 wolves.
Wolves in the United States have yet to recover to the majority of their former range and are absent from the majority of suitable habitat. The job of recovery is simply unfinished.
Wolves must be protected under the Endangered Species Act.
There is new hope in the confirmation of Secretary Deb Haaland to lead the Department of Interior. But the USFWS has already declined to review the Trump wolf delisting. We are spending the first 100 days of Secretary Haaland's term organizing support for the protection of gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
