The Annual Red Sky Nation Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives Powwow is held every July in Sioux City. The goal of the powwow is to prevent colonial violence through education, culture, and healing. It is also the only 3-day powwow in the nation dedicated to the MMIR crisis. Powwows take a lot of resources and the funds will go towards dance and drum competition winners, equipment fees, hotel rentals, t-shirts, and much more. No donation is too small–we are grateful for all the help we can get!
We named our powwow committee Red Sky Nation, which consists of representatives from two families who have been personally affected by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives crisis. They are Mike McCauley, Josh Taylor, and Melissa Ronette, who are the family of Terri McCauley (Omaha) and Trisha Rivers (our Siouxland Project Director), who is the niece of Paulette ‘Paulie’ Walker (Ho-Chunk). Terry McCauley was murdered in 1983 at the age of 18 and yet 40 years later her death still goes unsolved. Paulette ‘Paulie’ Walker, from the Winnebago Tribe, was killed in California in 1986 and her death is also still unsolved.
