Rural Victory Fund
In 2016, Hillary Clinton won just 32% of rural voters, down 6 points from Obama’s share four years earlier—a steep fall that helped explain her surprise loss.
In 2020, Biden did 1 point better with rural voters, a minor gain that helped secure razor-thin victories in several battleground states and offered an important lesson: Democrats don’t need to win a majority of rural voters to win the presidency. Just “losing by less” can make a huge difference in certain states—enough to change election outcomes.
This hopeful vision is now driving a growing array of organizing efforts. In places like Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Montana, and Arizona, new work is underway to engage rural voters, speak to their concerns, and otherwise show up in places that many Democrats have written off.
The Rural Democracy Initiative is an all-important hub of these exciting efforts. Its 501(c)(4) arm, Rural Victory Fund, supports organizers in battleground states with deep experience connecting with rural voters.
