Dr Randy Villegas is the proud 31-year-old son of working-class Mexican immigrants who is using his PhD in Political Science to fight for Medicare for All, an affordable cost of living and kicking corruption out of politics. He's an educator, family auto shop owner, school board Trustee and our Democratic candidate for Congress in the most flippable seat in the entire country in California's Central Valley (CA-22).
Until the primary in June, Republicans had never won less than 52% of the primary vote in Ca-22. This year, vulnerable Republican incumbent David Valadao finished with just 40%. This makes CA-22 one of the top flip opportunities in the entire country.
The people of the Central Valley deserve a better deal. They're the farmworkers who grow the food on our tables, the energy workers who keep our lights on - but even though they work hard every day, most of us are struggling to get by.
CA-22 is one of the poorest districts in the country, with one of the highest shares of Medicaid recipients - 70%. Educational attainment and political participation is low - but that doesn't reflect a lack of potential or value - it highlights a lack of the investment we deserve.
CA-22 should have been solidly Democratic decades ago. It is majority Democrat, the median age is just 30 years old, and it's the most Latino seat in the state - yet it has never had a Latino representative - Randy will be the first.
It's time the Central Valley has representation that they deserve, that will put them first - and now we need to step up for Randy and do everything we can to get him over the finish line.
