The son of Indian immigrants and the first Asian-American elected Ward Leader in Philadelphia's history, Nikil Saval worked as a writer and volunteer union organizer before running for office and becoming the first South Asian American member of the Pennsylvania Senate.
Since he was elected in 2020, Nikil has championed labor, climate, and housing policy — most notably his bipartisan Whole Home Repairs Program – and served as an outspoken progressive voice for Philadelphia.
He has also led efforts to get Democrats elected up and down the ballot, supporting candidates across the Commonwealth and funding the South Philly Voter Project, a grassroots voter-turnout effort in collaboration with State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler. In the 2022 General Election, the South Philly Voter Project contributed to a 10% increase in turnout in its target neighborhoods compared to the citywide average. Partnering with State Rep. Joe Hohenstein, he also founded and continues to lead Riverwards Votes, a local organizing effort to get out the vote in Northern Liberties, Fishtown, East Kensington, and Port Richmond.
