Kristie O’Brien is a lawyer, mediator, and mom who is running for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 13. She has had a unique career, including working on Capitol Hill as well as at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This experience showed Kristie how the spirit of bipartisanship used to work in the halls of power—as well as the dire consequences when leaders abuse their power.
Kristie returned home to Arizona to put down her roots and raise her family. For the past decade, she has focused on doing work to further voter protection. She is running for office to bring her experience solving problems and holding leadership accountable to the state capitol.
WHY THIS RACE
This race is a critical opportunity for Democrats to flip a key Arizona State Senate seat and move closer to winning a majority in the chamber. Legislative District 13 is one of the most competitive districts in the state, with recent statewide Democratic candidates carrying the district even as Republicans narrowly held legislative seats. As an open-seat contest in the rapidly changing East Valley, this race represents one of Democrats’ clearest pickup opportunities in 2026. Electing Kristie O’Brien would not only bring experienced, pragmatic leadership focused on affordability, education, and water security to the State Senate, but also help Democrats build the majority needed to safeguard voting access and push back against increasingly extreme Republican policies.
WHY ARIZONA
In the 2024 Arizona state legislative elections, Democrats faced significant headwinds and lost three seats while picking up one. Despite those challenges, Democrats have flipped key statewide offices and presidential votes in recent years. All 90 legislative seats and the governorship is up for grabs in 2026, giving Democrats a chance to shift the balance of power. Democratic victories in Arizona would help safeguard reproductive freedom, climate action, and voting rights while maintaining national momentum for the party.
