Anna Aho Rink is a health care provider, mother, and lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.) running for the 109th State House district. She worked as a physician assistant at Planned Parenthood in Marquette, Michigan, before it closed in 2025 amid Republican budget cuts. When Anna lost her job, it meant watching her patients lose access to medical care, and she realized her community wasn’t alone. Across the U.P., communities are being forced to figure it out on their own because even their Republican representatives aren’t standing up for them.
Anna noticed that the laws being passed in Lansing didn’t reflect the needs and realities of life in the U.P., and she knows why. Health care cuts keep happening in part because no one in the Michigan House has done direct patient care. Without that experience, blind spots and gaps in policy are inevitable. Anna is running to change that and give her community a leader who will put people over politics and fight for the U.P.
WHY THIS RACE
This race is critical to Democrats’ path to flipping the Michigan House and restoring a governing majority in Lansing. House District 109 is one of the most competitive seats in the state, with recent statewide races decided by less than a point and Democrats previously winning the district as recently as 2022. Electing Anna Aho Rink would not only flip a key battleground district in the Upper Peninsula, but also bring a frontline healthcare provider’s perspective to a legislature making critical decisions about rural healthcare and economic opportunity. In a chamber where only a few seats could determine control, this race is a must-win for Democrats in Michigan.
WHY MICHIGAN
In 2022, Democrats secured a trifecta in Michigan and delivered meaningful progress on voting rights, gun safety, and reproductive freedom. After Republicans reclaimed the House in 2024, it became the central battleground in Lansing, ushering in a divided government and slowing further progress. With margins razor thin, flipping the Michigan House in 2026 is essential to restoring a governing majority and ensuring the state can continue advancing policies that protect fundamental rights and support working families.
