Kiana Sears is a civil rights advocate, a seasoned public policy professional, and a graduate of Arizona State University’s Master of Public Administration program. She was appointed to the Arizona Senate in Legislative District 9 in 2025 after the former Senator resigned. She is now running for her first full elected term in the Arizona State Senate to ensure every family has access to strong schools, safe neighborhoods, and real opportunities.
Kiana’s commitment to service is inspired by her father, a Vietnam veteran, and her mother, a dedicated civil servant in municipal water services. She began learning the workings of Arizona’s state government and the details of public policy early in her career as a research staffer for the Arizona State Senate. She also learned the intricacies of utility policy as an executive utility regulatory consultant for the Arizona Corporation Commission. Kiana most recently served on the Governing Board of Mesa Public Schools for eight years.
WHY THIS RACE
Reelecting Kiana Sears would ensure that one of the legislature’s strongest voices for affordability, public education, healthcare access, and reproductive freedom remains in office at a time when those issues are under constant attack. As a growing and increasingly diverse district, LD-9 also represents the future of Arizona’s electorate, making this race important not only for maintaining Democratic momentum now, but for building a durable coalition capable of reshaping state government in the years ahead.
WHY ARIZONA
In the 2024 Arizona state legislative elections, Democrats faced significant headwinds and lost three seats while picking up one. Despite those challenges, Democrats have flipped key statewide offices and presidential votes in recent years. All 90 legislative seats and the governorship is up for grabs in 2026, giving Democrats a chance to shift the balance of power. Democratic victories in Arizona would help safeguard reproductive freedom, climate action, and voting rights while maintaining national momentum for the party.
