There is no independent, trusted process to hold police officers accountable in the City of San Diego. The San Diego Police Department is tasked with investigating complaints of misconduct of their own officers, a clear conflict of interest and a complete lack of transparency.
The police cannot police themselves and this unfair, unbalanced system means that San Diegans don’t have trust or confidence in the Police Department. This makes everyone less safe.
The commonsense solution is to establish a community-led, independent Commission on Police Practices, created and controlled by the people, not politicians and not SDPD. The Commission will investigate cases of police misconduct independent of the San Diego Police Department, will have its own staff and legal counsel, and will provide independent reports to City Hall.
Our coalition has submitted a charter amendment to establish the Commission on Police Practices to the City of San Diego for placement on the November 2020 ballot and we need your help to fund the campaign!
