WHY VIRGINIA

The upcoming special election for Virginia's House of Delegates is critically important, as it will determine the balance of power in the chamber. With a slim Democratic 51-49 majority, the outcome will either uphold Democratic control or create a 50-50 tie and force lawmakers to create a power-sharing agreement. This power-sharing agreement would ultimately lead to legislative gridlock, as both parties would have to negotiate on major policy initiatives, slowing down the legislative process. In addition, tied votes on legislation would fail to advance unless a compromise is reached. A tied House of Delegates would also increase the influence of swing legislators, as their votes could tip the balance on crucial bills.
