Del. Kannan Srinivasan, born to schoolteacher parents in Tamil Nadu, India, earned a Bachelor's in Commerce from Vivekananda College at the University of Madras and was one of the youngest to complete the Chartered Accountant certification in India. He immigrated to Virginia in 1992 to pursue a master's in accounting at Old Dominion University. A personal experience with the U.S. healthcare system after a serious accident inspired him to advocate for accessible healthcare, leading to his appointment to the State Medicaid Board by Governors McAuliffe and Northam. There, he played a key role in expanding Medicaid to over 2 million Virginians. He continues his commitment to healthcare access as a board member of the George Washington University Heart & Vascular Institute and the Loudoun Free Clinic. A Loudoun County resident since 1999, he has built a 30-year career in finance and business analytics.
In 2023, Srinivasan became the first Indian American immigrant elected to Virginia's House of Delegates. In his first session, he successfully passed eight bipartisan bills addressing key issues such as youth mental health, consumer and renter protections, the opioid crisis, and court efficiency. His results-driven approach earned him a reputation as an effective legislator. Now, he is running in the special State Senate election to continue championing solutions that promote a brighter, more prosperous future for all Virginians.
WHY VIRGINIA
The upcoming special election in Virginia's 32nd Senate District is pivotal, as it will determine control of the state Senate. Currently, Democrats hold a slim 21-19 majority. A Republican victory would create a 20-20 split, allowing the Republican lieutenant governor to cast tie-breaking votes, effectively shifting control to Republicans. This shift would significantly impact Governor Glenn Youngkin's legislative agenda, potentially facilitating the passage of his initiatives. Conversely, a Democratic win would maintain the existing balance, enabling the party to continue advancing its priorities. Given the high stakes, both parties are expected to invest in this race, recognizing its potential to reshape Virginia's current political landscape.
