About Representation Matters
Representation Matters is committed to changing the face of power by standing with and supporting progressive Black women and women of color candidates running for elected office.
This effort began in June 2020. The idea emerged after George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black men and women were brutally murdered, when it became all too clear that we all need to do more to address the pervasive and systemic racism in this country. One way to do that is to change who holds the power.
To make lasting change, we need to elect leaders who reflect the experiences of the diverse communities in our country. In order to shape effective policy, it is critical to have a diversity of voices and perspectives seen and heard at all levels of government. Women of color are particularly under-represented in elected office. Additionally, it has historically been harder for women to raise money for their campaigns, and women of color have faced even greater challenges. That needs to change.
Representation Matters is building a community that has a deep commitment to supporting and uplifting Black women and women of color candidates, with a call to action for all of us to do everything possible to change who holds the power.
The goal of Representation Matters is to level the playing field, and amplify the voices of Black women and women of color running for elected office.
