Nine people, mostly LGBT activists, were assaulted in the village of Shurnukh in Armenia’s Syunik province on August 3rd. Eyewitnesses say that more than 30 people from the village attacked nine LGBTQ activists and beat them. Following the incident, two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The crowd of roughly 30 attackers hit and kicked the victims while shouting “gays get lost” and “you are Turks.”
Local organizations in Armenia are working with the victims of the hate crime and representing the needs and interests of victims and we need your support. Financial help from our community in Los Angeles and beyond is crucial to support and continue the ongoing work being done in Armenia.
The money being raised by GALAS is going to support Armenia-based organizations in covering the medical expenses of the victims, helping provide victims with shelter, covering transportation expenses of the lawyers and victims from Yerevan to Goris, and other expenses relating to the hate crime.
All small or large donations to GALAS, collected through this campaign, will be granted to Armenia-based organizations to support the critical services that are provided to these individuals.
