Help us make, the only shelter for LGBT+ individuals in Puerto Rico, a reality.
Social isolation, LGBT-phobia, anxiety, economy, and mental health issues could be precursors towards becoming homeless, as well as environmental catastrophes and misuse of funds by government entities - these are real struggles for many aging LGBTQ and LGBTQ+ Puerto Ricans. Still, at Waves Ahead, we want to make sure that there is a roof for them. We want to make sure they know they are not alone. Our mission is to make sure that every LGBTQ person and family in Puerto Rico lives with dignity and with all the love and support they need to reach their full potential at every age.
Soraya Santiago was a pillar and icon of our community. An elder who "broke the mold" in so many aspects for the transgender and LGBTQ+ community. A heroine to many, including allies and others, a matriarch that provided aid in a time of need. She gave so much love, funds, and shared her knowledge with so many. We want to continue giving this love and aid to those in greater need. Soraya left our physical world on September 22, 2020, and her legacy continues stronger than ever. The video shown here is a testament to Soraya's strength, power, and reinforces our will to ensure that the spirit of her life's work transforms into a home for all.
We will honor her life's work by developing and opening the first (and only) LGBTQ+ focused transitional shelter (a 30+ bed/dry) in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
No one should feel alone in a community as strong and beautiful as ours. Will you donate today to make sure that Soraya's Shelter becomes a reality on the island's southern coast?
