We’re Not Going Back
When Social Security became law, every state but New Mexico had poorhouses. The poorhouse was a fate to be dreaded. Even in as progressive a state as New York, the conditions were abysmal.
A return to that may seem impossible, but it is not. If Social Security did not exist today, more than forty percent of those aged 65 and over would once again have below-poverty incomes.
We’re not going back!
Republican politicians will literally bring back the poorhouse if we let them. We can’t let that happen.
