Help spread the word to VOTE NO November 5th

Yet another misleading constitutional amendment question will be on your November 5th ballot in Wisconsin. Just chip in $1 and we'll send you a sticker to help us spread the word against it (or scroll down to see the whole story).

The context

(and feel free to skip to “The Amendment” below if you want just the basics)

The conservatives in the majority are at it again. On November’s ballot, we have another attempt to amend the state constitution to harm us all.

They keep trying the same dishonest strategy: rather than working with us to pass reasonable legislation that meets the needs of folks across the state, Republicans continue to pass bills which seek to amend Wisconsin’s constitution itself.

Why? Because our Democratic Governor can’t veto a constitutional amendment in the same way that he can the terrible legislation that they pass.

Republicans succeeded in pushing through an expansion of cash bail and an attack on welfare last April, but failed (overwhelmingly!) in August with their attempt to strip away a Governor’s power to respond to emergencies. Thank you for showing up and voting against those amendments.

But we won in August only because of the huge campaign against those amendments, and the thousands of conversations on doors to explain they impact they would have. This time around, we won’t have $3.4 million to spend. So it’s on each of us to spread the word.

Rep. Clancy speaking on November 9th of 2023 when Republicans passed the amendment, suggesting that if they don’t want to be called racist and xenophobic that they refrain from doing racist and xenophobic things.

The Amendment

(And why we should vote NO on it)

Our November ballot will have yet another misleading, confusingly worded attempt to alter our state constitution.

Here’s what it says:

It looks like a small change. And (much like the language in August) it looks pretty reasonable at first glance.

But it’s an attack on voting, on immigrants and on democracy.

It reinforces the absolutely incorrect, harmful and xenophobic myth, perpetuated by Trump and others, that folks without citizenship are voting in national elections. In Wisconsin, citizens can vote in our elections, and non-citizens cannot and are not.

Republicans know this, but are hoping to score political points while targeting our immigrant communities and casting doubts on the November election. It’s wrong.

  1. Changing who is able to cast a ballot from “every” to “only” a citizen means that our fundamental right to vote is further jeopardized. Every citizen should mean every citizen.
  2. This amendment can lead to an even more complicated voting registration process
  3. It can be used to further erode the rights of marginalized communities, and
  4. It can prevent more people from being able to vote, as 1 in 10 US Citizens don’t have documents to prove that they are citizens.

If this was a small detail, Republicans wouldn’t be trying to amend the Wisconsin constitution (again). This is an attack on our right to vote.

Please, stand up for our right to vote, and for the communities targeted by this, and VOTE NO when you vote on November 5th.

A sticker is free, but any donation will help us get the word out to defeat this amendment and to continue to support progressive champions across the state. Thank you!
