In 2016, Stephanie Morales was a young black prosecutor serving her first term as Commonwealth's Attorney in Portsmouth, Virginia. She successfully prosecuted a local police officer for killing an unarmed 18-year-old black man, William Chapman II, in a Walmart parking lot.
To contextualize the extraordinary nature of this accomplishment, consider that since 2007, only five white police officers have serviced jail time for killing a black person.
When a prosecutor like Morales stands up for justice and holds police accountable, we need to have her back.
