The Strong Cities Alliance, a 501(c)4 organization is led by former and current elected city officials who are activating an impressive network of former mayors, city council members and other elected office holders, who will work in cooperation with current officials to support allied progressive organizations fighting for Local Control (opposing state preemption of city authority) and other progressive issues that affect our nation’s cities.
Mission: The Strong Cities Alliance supports and empowers local government by advocating for and defending local democracy and supporting municipal solutions at all levels of government.
The Alliance will do this by deploying a volunteer speakers bureau, a legal response team, a rapid response media team and a legislative tracking and action team, all comprised of current and former elected officials.
Mayors and other city officials, both past and present, offer some of the strongest voices in fighting for progressive values, including local control, participatory democracy and good and effective government. Currently, no central network or organization exists to activate these ready and willing advocates. The Strong Cities Alliance is determined to be that organization. It will work in tandem with policy-driven organizations, such as the Local Solutions Support Center, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National League of Cities and other allied groups, to advance a pro-city agenda.
The Strong Cities Alliance is building a strong network of past and present elected officials ready to stand up and advocate for solutions that support and defend our cities. When it comes to fighting for our cities, we can find no stronger advocates than those elected officials who are serving or have served in local government.
In the next six months and beyond, the Strong Cities Alliance and/or the Educational Fund plan to:
● Expand a database of contact information of current and former elected officials from across the nation to create a central roster;
● Serve as a conduit for former elected officials to get back in the game and help enhance local democracy;
● Support allied organizations by activating current and former mayors and council members who will advocate on behalf of cities in the state houses, the courthouses and the media, telling the stories of cities; and
● Keep members abreast of current legislation affecting cities, allowing them to activate their established networks whenever the need arises.
We welcome your support and engagement as we build this important network.
Sincerely,
Hon. Mike Suarez
President
