As someone who has dedicated over three decades of their life to education and social justice, I can attest to the profound impact of systemic racism on our society. My journey began in the early 1990s, immersed in research within Milwaukee Public Schools, where I witnessed firsthand the disparities in opportunities faced by black and Hispanic students. What I initially perceived as equal opportunities within public education revealed itself to be a stark reality of inequality perpetuated by the deep-rooted structures of white supremacy.
That experience shifted my trajectory dramatically as I transitioned from collaborative research in the semiconductor sector to focus on improving outcomes for students affected by poverty. For 35 years, I've steadfastly committed to uplifting schools far from success, striving to create equitable learning environments for all.
However, it wasn't until the last six years that my eyes were truly opened to the pervasive influence of white supremacy culture across all facets of society. The realization dawned on me: as white individuals, we bear the responsibility to educate ourselves and actively dismantle the systems of oppression that uphold white supremacy. That’s the work that SURJ was created to champion.
That's why I'm fundraising for Stand Up for Racial Justice. They are at the forefront of the fight against racial injustice, working tirelessly to dismantle systemic racism and promote equity for all. By supporting their initiatives, we can collectively work towards a more just and inclusive society where every individual, regardless of race, has the opportunity to thrive.
Join me in this crucial endeavor. Let's stand together, educate ourselves, and take meaningful action to undo the harm inflicted by white supremacy culture for the betterment of us all.
