SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) was founded in 2009 by two queer white women from Kentucky, responding to the call from Black movement leaders to organize white people within our own communities amidst the racist backlash against the election of President Obama.
I have found a political home with SURJ because I believe in the value of organizing out of mutual interest. Racial justice isn’t just something we help people of color with. We must find our stake— our mutual interest— in joining these fights. I also just love their approach to organizing!
SURJ's approach prioritizes longer conversations and deeper organizing that focuses on connecting over values and issues, not centering a party or a candidate. And it WORKS.
However, without your help and at our current size and scale of political power, we are not currently able to win sweeping changes for the multiracial working class. We must bring thousands more people into our organizing. To make that happen, we need to raise another $400,000 for 2025.
That's where you come in. Will you join me?
In Solidarity,
Lisa Williams
