Angela Nelson is a lifelong resident of Coon Rapids, an educator and school principal, and a mom running for the Minnesota State Senate in District 35 as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Her community roots run deep; in 1959 her grandparents built one of the first homes in Sand Creek Park, while her other grandparents lived just a few blocks away near Shortstop.
After college, Angela moved back to Coon Rapids and bought her first home down the road from her grandmother. That’s when she began to see more clearly how families in the community were struggling with affordable childcare, rising prescription drug costs, and the lack of resources for an aging population.
Driven by her love for Coon Rapids and a belief that leadership means listening, showing up, and working with people to solve real problems, Angela is running for the State Senate to build a stronger, more affordable, and more caring future for her community.
WHY THIS RACE
This race is one of the most important in Minnesota because it will help determine whether Democrats can hold onto their narrow majority in the State Senate. District 35 is a true battleground, with recent elections decided by razor-thin margins. In a chamber where control could hinge on a single seat, defending and flipping districts like this is essential to preventing a Republican takeover.
WHY MINNESOTA
Minnesota is one of the most important electoral battlegrounds in 2026, with both open gubernatorial and U.S. senate races, and control of both state legislative chambers up for grabs, creating a rare opportunity to shape the state’s political future. Success in Minnesota would allow Democrats to protect and expand progress on affordability, health care, and education, while reinforcing the state’s role as a critical Midwestern stronghold. With high-profile statewide races driving turnout and attention, down-ballot victories will be essential to ensuring Democrats can translate that energy into sustained governing power.
