States Win for April Cook (NC SD 34)

April Cook is a first-time candidate and a fourth-generation North Carolinian with deep roots in Montgomery County and Concord. She raised her family in Cabarrus County and has built her life around faith, service, and strengthening the communities she calls home.


April cofounded and led the Lake Norman Community Health Clinic for more than two decades, helping thousands of uninsured North Carolinians access affordable, high-quality care. She later served as board chair and now serves as CEO of the North Carolina Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, where she advocates for free and charitable clinics across the state to ensure no one goes without care.


April has been recognized with honors, including the Charlotte Business Journal’s Excellence in Health Care Award and Business Today’s Top Women in Business distinction for her compassionate, results-driven leadership. She is running for the North Carolina State Senate to bring that same hands-on experience to Raleigh, and will fight to expand access to health care and to ensure every North Carolinian has dignity and opportunity.


WHY THIS RACE

In 2024, Democrats ended the Republican supermajority in the North Carolina House, protecting Democratic Governor Josh Stein’s veto power. A Republican supermajority remains in the State Senate, but Democrats held onto all their seats despite unfavorable redistricting of the Senate maps. Electing April and flipping Senate District 34 would help chip away at the Republican supermajority in the Senate and block further attacks on reproductive rights, public education, and voting access in one of the nation’s most consequential battleground states.


WHY NORTH CAROLINA

North Carolina will be a defining battleground in the 2026 midterms, with control of the legislature and an open U.S. Senate seat on the line. In 2024, Democrats ended the Republican supermajority in the House, giving Democratic Governor Josh Stein the ability to veto Republican attacks on reproductive rights, public schools, and voting access. Flipping vulnerable districts and defending key incumbents is the only way to keep Democrats strong enough to stop the GOP’s extreme agenda.
