I'm Lynn Gerson, and I'm running for County Council in District 5 in South Carolina.

I was eight years old when I walked into a John F. Kennedy campaign office and asked for a holographic pin. I still have it. That's when politics became a lifelong passion, and I've been in the trenches ever since: knocking doors at 17, leading a neighborhood get-out-the-vote effort, serving on the organizing committee for the first Women's March, and now leading Democrats of Sun City as president. I spent 35 years in law, the last 14 as a litigation manager overseeing a statewide panel of 176 attorneys I built from the ground up. The guiding principle never changed: do the right thing at the right time.

The pressures facing this district are the same ones squeezing fast-growing communities all over the country. Development gets approved before the roads, water systems, and emergency services exist to support it. Nurses, home health aides, teachers, first responders, and service workers get priced out of the towns they keep running, and when they leave, access to care and basic services leaves with them. Coastlines and waterways get treated as an afterthought. And residents are left reading about decisions after they've already been made.

None of that is inevitable. It's the product of a way of governing that puts developers ahead of the people who already live somewhere, and it can be changed by electing people who plan ahead, spend carefully, and answer the phone. That work happens at the county level, in races that rarely make national news and are won or lost by a few hundred votes. This is one of them, in a red state, in a seat that is winnable.
