The mission of Texas Jail Project is to liberate communities by organizing with and advocating for people incarcerated in Texas county jails and their loved ones.
We envision a world where communities of care replace systems of punishment –a world where healthy communities make jails obsolete.
Texas Jail Project’s work seeks to reduce and mitigate immediate jail harm, while thoughtfully scaling base-building, public education, and local campaigns.
Our work directly confronts and seeks to dismantle ableism in the criminal legal system by
Historically, less than 1% of all philanthropic funding is given to women of color. Organizations like ours in the South are even further under-resourced. As an all-women-of-color team (most of whom are personally impacted by the criminal legal system), our strategies advance movement authenticity and equity by requiring investment in historically undervalued labor: Black and brown women, and women with incarcerated loved ones.
When we map our future for the next five years, we see high-impact jail harm reduction and high-growth base building. When we map our future further, we see a world where healthy communities make jails obsolete. We see widespread jail closures as hospitals, community centers, health clinics, and supportive housing spring up like wildflowers to replace them. We see the end of mass incarceration catalyzed by an organized, loving resistance to pretrial detention.
If you see yourself in that future too, join us by investing in and building with the Texas Jail Project team.
