If Congress doesn’t act soon, 78,000 Afghan refugees who helped American forces could face deportation back to the brutal Taliban regime. So we need your voice today, to ensure that Congress passes critical legislation and provides these refugees with a pathway to permanent residency in the U.S.
After the fall of Kabul in 2021 and the chaotic U.S. withdrawal, our government used a policy known as “humanitarian parole” to evacuate Afghan citizens who had cooperated with the American-backed government -- and thus had a very credible fear of retaliation from the Taliban after they seized power.
Unfortunately, that status has a two-year time limit which will expire this summer. And to make the situation worse, because of severe backlogs in the application process, only a very small percentage of refugees have been able to complete permanent asylum applications.
A bipartisan bill to solve this crisis, the Afghan Adjustment Act, has been introduced by Senators Lindsey Graham and Amy Klobuchar in the Senate and by Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Democrat Earl Blumenauer in the House. We can pass this bill if fight for it.
