Back in 1975, a shootout ended the Occupation at Wounded Knee, under which American Indian Movement (AIM) activists and Oglala Lakota tribal members occupied the town of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation here in South Dakota.
Two FBI agents and one young Native man were killed in the shootout. AIM activist Leonard Peltier was there that day, and was arrested despite a complete lack of evidence connecting him to the FBI agents’ deaths.
Today, 48 years later, Peltier continues to maintain his innocence (and there’s a LOT of evidence to back him up) – but he remains incarcerated in a maximum security prison at the ripe old age of 78.
President Biden needs to correct this grave injustice and free Leonard Peltier to live out the rest of his life in dignity, with his family, on his ancestral lands.
