For generations, Oak Flat has been a place of prayer, ceremony, and gathering, and it is a living testament to the rich history of Indigenous peoples.
Oak Flat is in imminent danger because the U.S. Forest Service, under the authority of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, is ready to hand over the land to a mining company and the final step is an impact statement. If approved, this project will lead to the irreversible destruction of Oak Flat and its invaluable cultural, historical, and environmental resources.
The proposed Resolution Copper mine would extract an estimated 40 billion pounds of copper through a process called block caving, which involves the collapse of the ground surface above the ore body. This method would result in a crater two miles wide and 1,000 feet deep, destroying Oak Flat and its surrounding ecosystems.
The devastating impacts that the Resolution Copper project would have on Oak Flat are clear. That’s why we must unite and demand action from Secretary Vilsack. The future of this invaluable site depends on our collective efforts to raise awareness and make our voices heard.
