Every federal judge in the United States bound by the Code of Conduct for United States Judges, except the nine judges on the U.S. Supreme Court.
No one is beyond the reach of the law, except, it seems, the nation’s preeminent guardians and protectors of the law.
The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act would:
- require the creation of a code of ethical conduct for the U.S. Supreme Court,
- trigger the appointment of an Ethics Investigations Counsel, and
- require justices to publicly disclose recusal decisions.
Justices cannot police themselves for conflicts of interest, for breaching the clear Constitutional lines separating the Judicial and Executive branches, or for unethical pillow talk with spouses. It's up to us to make it happen.
