NRA Republicans are pushing for a law that would make Florida the 26th state to let people carry loaded guns without permits, background checks, or safety training.
This is a recipe for disaster and puts the safety of everyone at risk. Permitless carry sends the message that carrying a gun is a casual, everyday activity that requires no more thought than carrying a cell phone. This attitude is dangerous and does not reflect the serious danger of owning and using a firearm.
The statistics are alarming -- permitless carry has been linked to a rise in both firearm homicides and thefts of inadequately secured weapons in states that have implemented such policies.
This is unacceptable and must be stopped before it's too late. By eliminating the requirement for a permit and training, permitless carry would increase the risk of accidental shootings, particularly in public places.
