Guns in the classroom hurt the mental and emotional well-being of students and teachers by creating a constant state of fear and anxiety, making it difficult to focus on learning or teaching.
Various studies have demonstrated that arming teachers and increasing police presence in schools are not effective strategies for reducing school shootings.
In fact, these measures lead to an escalation of violence, particularly against Black students, other students of color, and disabled students, who are disproportionately targeted by such policies.
We must stand against the dangerous proposition of militarizing our schools. The normalization of guns in school settings perpetuates a culture of violence and leads to desensitization to the dangers associated with firearms and a militarized presence.
