In Ecuador, la UDAPT (Union of People Directly Impacted by Texaco) (now Chevron) is facing an imminent and major threat to democracy that could finally put the nail the coffin of their nearly 30 year battle to hold Chevron accountable for its destruction of Indigenous communities and the Ecuadorian Amazon.
In 2011, la UDAPT won a precedent-setting $9.2B settlement against Chevron in the Ecuadorian courts. Today, the right-wing government is bending over backwards to placate Chevron, and is pushing through a referendum on April 21 that could overturn a constitutional protection, potentially reversing the damages and actually requiring Ecuadorian taxpayers to pay Chevron!
This would be a horrific miscarriage of justice that could also open the pathway for further targeting and persecution of our allies working in their defense.
In the next 11 days, la UDAPT is working to mobilize half of Ecuador’s population to oppose this referendum! Please help us raise and mobilize $60,000 by April 21 to fund outreach, travel, events, communications, social media, radio and television placement, and engagement of influencers and media.
Because UDAPT has no US funding infrastructure, Corporate Accountability is collecting these funds, all of which will immediately be regranted. If you'd like to make a gift by stock or wire, please email cjager@corporateaccountability.org.
