Underpainting Collective: School of Drawing and Painting serves the Bay Area as a vital center for learning and discourse, providing studio space that facilitates the making of art in community. We’re raising funds to keep our art school alive—to sustain an Oakland legacy and a painting tradition that has endured across several centuries.

This past winter, our principal instructor David Hardy shared that he is retiring after five decades of running the art school. David founded the Oakland Atelier School of Classical Realism in 1969, teaching hundreds of students how to paint and draw like the Old Masters. Now at the tender age of 95, David has entrusted the title and legacy of the school to Charlie Antolin, an instructor who has been with the school for over a decade.

With David’s retirement, former and current students came together to shepherd the school into a new era, aligning this space for art instruction with fresh values and principles. We are establishing a local artists cooperative open to community artists in order to guide in the next chapter of the atelier. Critical century-old art institutions have been closing across the country, which makes this moment a crucial and urgent opportunity.

We are reaching out to you—our community of supporters, alumni and art lovers—to help us during this change. We need to raise $30,000. Your contributions will support us to jointly-run a school that reflects our shared values of a more diverse and equitable future where we create art that enables people to envision themselves as freer beings.

Your contribution will enable us to immediately:

  • Maintain rent payments on our physical space
  • Pay for figure models and compensate instructors
  • Hold workshops in oil painting traditions and expand offerings to include more mediums
  • Host retreats and support groups
  • Create welcoming environment for artists of all ages and skill levels to gather, dream and support one another

Thank you for your consideration and time!

In solidarity,

Underpainting Collective
