In the last eight years we have seen an assault on the norms of our democracy. Across the country, and here in the commonwealth, opportunistic Republicans have embraced divisiveness; trying to limit our fellow citizens’ ability to vote, passing laws and using language that discriminate, and attempting to delegitimize President Obama with obstruction and slander. As a result, our civic discourse was poisoned, roads went unbuilt, jobs went missing, healthcare legislation was sabotaged, and crucial government functions were undermined, including the unprecedented blocking of a Supreme Court nomination. This is not just true at the national level - Virginia, too, has suffered from the scourge of this partisan warfare.

I believe that America is a place where all people should have a voice, and that it is our government's obligation to ensure that all people have the opportunity to, in the words of our most famous Virginian, “pursue happiness.”

In Virginia we can do this by ensuring we have representation that blocks the gerrymandering scheme Republicans have used to avoid representing millions of Virginians accurately. We must also continue the work of Governor McAuliffe and encourage more voting and participation through rights restoration, effective and nondiscriminatory election reform, and more.

We can work to create more jobs, and more job security, so that our fellow Virginians have the peace of mind to enjoy life with their family and actively participate in their community.

And we can work to fulfill the ideals that “all men are created equal” and all people are “equal under the law.” Rather than trying to erect discriminatory barriers we should make the law work for everyone, whether it is protecting womens’ rights, ending legal discrimination against the LGBTQ community, or reforming the criminal justice system.

America, and Virginia, are at their best when they fulfill their promises for all their citizens. I want to do my part to make that happen by being your Delegate.
