Victory- NYC passes first ever legislation to make all calls from city jails free

New York City just passed the country's first ever bill to make all phone calls made from city jails FREE.

Color Of Change has been working on this campaign for months and it's a huge and historic victory. Now, with our success in New York City leading the way we're ready to take this nationwide--can we count on your support to make this happen?

We believe that phone calls should be free in all jails, especially considering that most people are held there pre-trial, simply because they can't afford the cost of bail. And yet, despite this obvious indicator of poverty, cities see it fit to charge fees on phone calls and other necessities in order to pad its revenue lines. We know how important family contact and communication are for ensuring successful reentry to society. Speaking to family and friends should be encouraged not taxed.

Free phone service should be the norm in City jails--join us as we work to pass legislation across the country making jail phone calls free.

Eliminating jail phone call fees in New York City and across the country, is a critical step towards guaranteeing that profit is not a motivator for cities to lock up our people.
