Wala Blegay was elected to serve her first four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2022 General Election and represents Councilmanic District 6. She was elected as Vice Chair by her peers during her first term on the Council. During her first term, she spearheaded an aggressive people-driven agenda authoring legislation to encourage quality development in the County, limiting tobacco stores and marijuana shops in residential communities, incentivizing healthy restaurants, providing tax credits for public safety employees, creating a task force to address emergency room wait times, requiring security cameras in high-capacity apartment buildings, rent stabilization and more. As Chair of the Council sitting as the Board of Health, she led the efforts of the Council addressing nurse-patient ratios, long emergency room wait times and mental health.


She is a passionate advocate for Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, and Workers’ Rights, and the creator and host of the “Chat With a Lawyer” television talk show, a free legal resource for County residents. A grassroots organizer, she has committed her office to the Engagement, Education, and Empowerment of all stakeholders. An adjunct professor at the American University Washington College of Law and former staff attorney for the DC Nurses Association advocating to improve the working environment for nurses and working families, Council Member Blegay has been noted as the “working people’s” voice. She has previously served the Maryland Governor’s Task Force for the Study of Economic Development and Apprenticeship Programs, ACLU of Maryland, Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women, Board of Directors for the Training Source, Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission, Prince George’s County NAACP, Emerge Maryland and the Maryland Coalition of Consumer Rights. She has published numerous articles related to civil rights, health care and education and is the recipient of the 40 under 40 in Prince George’s County Award, the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Presidential Service Award and the Daily Record’s Leading Women Award. Council Member Blegay is a first generation Liberian and Nigerian American; graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in Government and Politics; and she earned a J.D. from the American University, Washington College of Law. She is a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. A Prince George’s County resident for more than 20 years, Council Member Blegay resides in Kettering.More information at www.walablegay.com.
