"My name is Dr. Valerie McCray and I’m working hard to become your next U.S. Senator representing Indiana. No. I haven’t spent my entire life in politics. Instead, I’ve spent my career serving others as a clinical psychologist, working with veterans living with PTSD, incarcerated individuals in the prison system, and children who’ve suffered from gun violence and family trauma.

Over the past few years, while listening to my fellow Hoosiers and simultaneously witnessing the attacks from the right on our democracy… I asked myself, why not? Why not become the first woman, an African American Woman, to represent the great state of Indiana as a United States Senator? Why not use my compassion, empathy, tenacity and resilience to fight for my constituents? The answer is it’s simply too costly to sit on the sidelines.

As your Senator, I will fight for women’s rights to choose and bodily autonomy. And relentlessly, I will focus on beyond-subsistence wages, because I know what it’s like to be a struggling middle-class American; a single mom, a student using the same bag for books and diapers. I will champion union support, healthcare for all, equal rights for everyone, strengthening public education, and repealing Citizens United so people (not corporations) can be truly represented. I will fight for student loan debt reduction, closing the wealth gap, and funding environmental restoration efforts.

I am both compassionate and fierce, and can relate to the struggles of working class Hoosiers. I will break barriers and build a brighter future for Indiana. Together, we can build a movement for change—one that prioritizes mental health and women’s rights and ensures every individual has access to resources needed and policies that help us thrive."
