Maria's List 2022 Worcester Municipal Candidate Recommendations

Worcester is the 2nd largest city in Massachusetts. Electorally, it largely mirrors the Commonwealth's statewide picture in partisanship and ideology. The political stage is set for progressives and communities of color to gain power and momentum in Worcester, all that is missing is deeper financial investment. Can you chip in today?

Our Recommended Candidates

  • Thu Nguyen (At - Large, Worcester City Council): This was elected in 2021 and became the first openly non-binary candidate elected to public office in Massachusetts history. A Maria's List endorsed candidate, Thu immigrated from Vietnam in 1993, and has called Worcester home ever since. Thu has dedicated their career to serving our young people. On the council, they have led the fight against Worcesters crisis pregnancy center.
  • Etel Haxhiaj (Ward 5, Worcester City Council): Etel was elected in 2021. She has called Worcester home since 2001, arriving as a young adult with her parents after fleeing Albania’s political upheaval. After living in Worcester for many years, she has come to the realization that the city government, the council and city manager, are not representative of the community at large and not responsive to their needs either. As an elected official she has prioritized education, housing, and constituent services. Etel was the first Albanian immigrant elected to the Worcester City Council.

Background

Maria’s List is a woman-powered political communication and donor hub. Its mission is to comb the country for amazing women and people of color candidates using electoral research as well campaign and movement analysis.

How it works

Our approach in 2023 doubles down on the movement power that has delivered progressive wins while empowering communities to hold elected officials accountable. Each month this summer and fall, we will focus on one city or region of Massachusetts in which we identify candidates and organizations that support a long-term vision for shifting power across the state. By stacking contributions vertically across organizations and municipal candidates, we can build sustainable movement power and set the stage for Deep Democracy wins in the years to come.
