Support LA Jail Reform Ballot Measure!

Goal thermometer

Dear Community,

Please join White People for Black Lives (WP4BL) and coalition partners as we fundraise for a ballot measure to Reform LA County Jails!

The initiative before LA County voters will give the Sheriffs Department Civilian Oversight Commission real subpoena power when officers kill with impunity, and create a plan to justly reallocate $3.5 Billion in planned spending to expand the WORLD'S largest jail system.

Can you give $15, $20, or $50 to pay signature gatherers to make sure this transformative measure gets on the November ballot? We still need $300k to finish gathering the 150,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot. All donations go to the ballot initiative, and none to WP4BL.

The Campaign

The money you give will pay for signature gathering (typically $3 per signature) to put a ballot measure before LA County votersthe measure will take major steps towards stopping police killings of black, brown, disabled, homeless, and other targeted people in LA. It will also take steps to reduce LA’s massive jail population.

Specifically, the measure will 1) strengthen the investigative powers of the civilian oversight commission (by giving it subpoena power) and 2) mandate that the commission present a plan to the Board of Supervisors on how some of the $3.5 billion allocated to building new jails could and should go towards alternatives to incarceration.

County legislators are too deep in the pocket of law enforcement, so as a coalition we have to put this measure on the ballot ourselves.

Just stew on this for a second, friends: LA County boasts the most police killings of any county in the US, and maintains the biggest jail system in the world!

Who’s Running the Campaign

Reform LA County Jails is a coalition of grassroots, community-based organizations, prison and jail experts, criminal justice reform leaders, residents, business owners and the community at large working to pass the Reform Jails and Community Reinvestment Initiative. #BLM founder Patrisse Cullors is a leader in the campaign, as are two sitting members of the Civilian Oversight Commission. WP4BL is an organizational member of the coalition.

This ballot measure is the most far-reaching action the campaign has taken to date. This measure will set a precedent for police accountability and incarceration practices across California.
