Help Me Build a Better Lawrence

Since 2010, I have been dedicated to the well-being of future generations and our lovely city of Lawrence, and I have long advocated for positive change. In 2019, our community, leaders, students, teachers, parents, and so many others believed that the time had come for me to serve this community. As a write-in candidate for District F's School Committee, I hoped to bring new and practical solutions to establishing a just school system for the next generation.

I won't lie, this challenge has been a learning experience for many of us, but where there is a will, there is a way. During my first term, I thoroughly researched the state takeover "receivership" law and procedures in order to comprehend its structure and the achievement of objectives. While you see a data projection that supports a stronger educational system. I hear the horrible lived experience of people who are doing the groundwork. We have uncovered data corruption in order to reach statewide goals that claim "we are all treated equally" when, in fact, we are not. The passage of the 2019 Student Opportunity Act was one of the circumstances that revealed the injustice.

During my second term, we concentrated on recruiting a slate of leaders to serve you and your children who have the ability to contribute and have witnessed the injustice firsthand, with the experience of being a teacher, alumni, parent, veteran, administrator, first-generation, special needs, and plenty more.

We re-established our monthly meetings to provide you with answers during an uncertain time, we adopted rules to hold ourselves accountable, we established a structure to serve you, we hosted events with our own money because neither the city nor the state funds us, we challenged our elected government to do more, we brought your attention to issues within your schools, we celebrated your accomplishments, we provided you with the tools to fight for what is right, and we have done so much because we care.

I am prepared to fight alongside you and many others from outside our community against those who want less for you and want to take away your right to vote. I need you more than ever right now.

In service,

Jonathan Guzman
