The Andrew Goodman Foundation

Fighting for Youth Voters

It’s #GivingTuesday 2019! All around the world today, people are supporting the charities they love to create a more just and equitable world. Andrew Goodman was a 20 years old college student when he volunteered for Freedom Summer 1964 to create that better world. Tragically, white supremacist terrorists - the KKK - assassinated him and his two co-civil rights companions, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, on their first day in Mississippi, when they were attempting to register African Americans to vote.

It is sad that we still face ongoing attacks on our democracy. The murders of Andrew and Michael, two white privileged Jewish young men in 1964 helped move the national conversation on voting rights, so that a year later it helped with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The FBI searched 44 days for Andy, Mickey and James. When they finally discovered the bodies of these 3 young men, the FBI also uncovered 9 additional black bodies. These black lynching deaths never garnered attention from the national or even local media for that matter. We took it seriously when the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013 in the Shelby case. And now our work continues to protect and increase youth civic power and voting rates.

Do you believe in our democracy and that compassion transcends race, gender, religion, and political ideology?

Give today in support of young Americans whose voices are being deliberately silenced by the rise of voter suppression barriers:

  • Wisconsin imposed a voter ID law that puts onerous restrictions on the use of student IDs for voting, unlike other permissible forms of ID, discriminating against young people
  • Tennessee enacted a restrictive law that criminalized simple mistakes on voter registration forms and violated free speech
  • Florida banned early voting from any college campus, deliberating denying the voting rights of over 830,000 students

That’s why we’re fighting against student voter suppression everywhere. Will you support us this #GivingTuesday to ensure that young people are able to make their voices heard?
