Today I had an experience. As I was leaving a restaurant with a friend, the street I needed to cross had "Yes on 8" supporters on every corner holding banners. There was a group of people waiting to cross the street with me and everyone was silent. Before I knew it I was screaming at the top of my lungs, "Prop 8 is full of hate! Prop 8 is full of hate!" The supporters were not every happy about this and tried to explain that they did not hate. But because I opened my big mouth, something amazing happened- other people began to say things to the people holding banners. People were clapping in support of my words, straight people were verbally addressing their opposition to Prop 8. As I think back on this incident, I realize most people don't want to speak up, most people don't want to cause a scene BUT once someone has started, once someone has given them a chance or a reason, they will express their opinion. I also realized that I have not done enough to oppose this proposition. I don't want to wake up on November 5th to see that Prop 8 passed and think to myself, "You should have done something, you could have helped." Screaming on a corner is not enough, but it taught me something. If you give someone the opportunity, they are more likely to help. So here is an opportunity I am giving to you. Give some money to help us fight. Any little bit will do. $1, $5, or $1000. I don't want you to feel like you should have done something. I don't want you to cross the street and think, "I should have said something!"
The ballot description for Proposition 8 makes it perfectly clear. Prop 8 "eliminates the right of same sex couples to marry."
No On Prop 8, Equality For All is the coalition that is leading the fight to defeat Prop 8 and defend the fundamental right to marry for all Californians. Help me help them. Contribute to my fundraising page today!
