February 2011: State Senator Lena Taylor

In the heart of one of the great Midwest urban centers, State Senator Lena C. Taylor (D-Milwaukee) has led the charge for improving the educational outcomes for every child in Milwaukee. Across the educational ecosystem, Taylor has been promoting and demanding quality in the public schools, charter schools, and the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.

In 2009, amid a crazy state budget process, Taylor paved the way on providing increased accountability in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program. Building on this success, Taylor worked with former Governor Jim Doyle and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett to lead the charge for quality education in the Milwaukee Public Schools. Taylor authored the bill and became the standard bearer to provide for mayoral governance of MPS to clean the politics out of the education of Milwaukee’s children.

Taylor knew these battles wouldn't be easy. She's been accused of selling out public education because of her efforts to improve and expand quality education options. Those who feared change in the Milwaukee Public Schools picketed the Senator’s house. But through it all, Taylor has remained a vocal advocate of reform.

A new legislative session is underway and Taylor is once again at the forefront of education reform - expansion of the choice program, changes to the school funding formula, and intensive work on improving reading scores in MPS. And she's facing a tough re-election in the fall of 2012 to her third term in the Wisconsin Senate.
